Falsterbo Bird Show

Ringing has been, if I'm completely honest, rather slow over the last few days. We're just about scraping into double figures at Flommen on most mornings (totals online — click Ringing). Birding has been better and, though we're still waiting for a big push, numbers of Honey Buzzards and other migrating raptors have been decent — e.g. today saw 1,000 Sparrowhawks and 100 Honey Buzzards migrate, while three Lesser Spotted Eagles were seen on the peninsula (I saw one of them from the obs). Al fresco dining is essential at the moment; over the last few days I've seen Osprey, Red Kite, Peregrine, Honey Buzzard, Common Buzzard, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk and Hen Harrier whilst I've been scoffing my lunch.

It was also Falsterbo Bird Show this weekend.

I sat in on the Swarovski ATX scope talk.

If I wanted one before, now I really want one. Just look how cool it makes you look...

Funniest moment was the annual Sweden vs Denmark bird quiz. A lot of the jokes went straight over my head, but three guys jumping about on stage pretending to be lekking Ruffs is pretty much universally funny.

Finally, what might very well have been best bird handled this week was sadly an ex-bird. An ex-1cy Nightjar, to be precise; a Sparrowhawk's attempted dinner that was brought into the lighthouse by a member of the public.

A shame, but nevertheless a nice chance to study the bird up close.
