København

I've passed through Copenhagen a few times now on my way to Sweden but have never lingered longer than to collect my bag and buy a train ticket; so I thought it was about time I ventured out of the airport and explore the city. It also gave me the chance to catch up with a couple of Danish guys I knew, and I spent a very enjoyable two days with Nikolaj Christensen who showed me what the city had to offer — for both the would-be tourist and the birder (thanks Nikolaj!). Here's a collection of buildings and things I snapped as we passed through the city:

Afterwards, we headed to Nikolaj's local patch — a series of lakes to the north of the city — where we saw Common Sandpiper, Common Kingfisher, Common Tern and breeding Common Buzzard, and heard Marsh Warbler.

The next day we headed north to Gilbjer bird station where we joined Andreas Pedersen who was taking care of the daily migration count; although today, with the wind from the west, it was more a case of "the daily count". That said, we did manage a couple of migrants: Siskin, Yellow Wagtail, Merlin, and, offshore, Red-throated Diver.

We left Andreas to enjoy his dinner of pasta, sauce and (still) frozen fish :) and headed back to Copenhagen, where I caught a train across the bridge to Sweden.
